SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - A woman hit the side of the I-220 bridge in her car, then was hit and killed Monday by a tractor-trailer as she tried to flag traffic around the wreck in the dark, the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office said.
The tractor-trailer overturned, scattering plywood across the bridge's westbound lanes.
The victim was later identified as Clara Neal, 39, of Plain Dealing, sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Chadwick said.
Neal was traveling west in the inside lane when she lost control of her vehicle, crossed over to the outside lane and hit the bridge, authorities said. After the accident, Neal's car was partially obstructing traffic, so she tried to direct traffic around the site, Chadwick said.
Chadwick said the woman's sons were in a car behind her, and stopped to help. She said the woman was trying to direct traffic around them while they checked damage to her car about 6 a.m. Monday, when she was hit by an oncoming 18-wheeler.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
The accident remains under investigation.
