Wildlife & Fisheries Commission plans to educate new crab fishermen

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission, according to a notice of intent passed Thursday, will work with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the Louisiana Crab Task Force to educate new crab fishermen statewide.

A release from LDWF says those who complete the program will be required to learn the following:

proper fishing techniques necessary for the health and sustainability of crabs
proper techniques for the best capture and presentation of the crabs for marketability
proper placement, tending, and maintenance of crab traps to avoid potential conflicts

LWFC authorizes the new professionalism program for new entrants into the crab fishery to include a mandatory apprenticeship program, the release said.

The public is invited to comment at the LWFC monthly meetings through September 1. Comments will also be accepted by email to Jason Froeba at jfroeba@wlf.la.gov or by mail to Jason Froeba, Office of Fisheries Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries, P.O. Box 9800, Baton Rouge, LA, 70898.
