Wilbert Thibodeaux Case Update

The state is seeking the death penalty for a man accused of killing a Chitamacha Police officer.

Wilbert Thibodeaux is accused of killing officer Rick Riggenbach, and opening fire on two St. Mary Parish Sheriff Deputies in January. Thibodeaux is also accused of killing 79-year-old Eddie Lyons.

Lyons' body was found in his burned trailer. Police also believed Thibodeaux started the fire.

Today was the second arraignment hearing The first was thrown out because all of Thibodeaux's charges were on one bill of information, which is not allowed by law.

At one point, Thibodeaux waved to two women, close friends, who didn't wave back. They chose not to do an on-camera interview, but did say they didn't wave back because they "were shocked to see him like that. We're here because he has no family. It puts us in an awkward situation because we knew Riggenbach too. He was a good guy."

Thibodeaux showed no emotion as the state's attorny's announced they plan to seek the death penalty.

The next step in the case will be a status update on Thibodeaux's insanity plea in late October. If he is found to be legally insane, the death penalty will be off the table.

Trial is set to begin in mid November.
