Westgate's Diontae Spencer Pulls National, Conference Awards At McNeese

LAKE CHARLES - McNeese State senior kick returner/wide receiver Diontae Spencer had one of, if not the, best individual performance in Cowboys' football history in last Saturday's win at Stephen F. Austin, a performance that saw him tie or break 11 school, Southland Conference, and Football Championship Subdivision records.

And for those efforts, Spencer has been named a national player of the week by two organizations as well as the Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.

The New Iberia native was hailed by the organization College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) as its national Performer of the Week, National All-Purpose Player of the Week, National Kickoff Returner of the Week and National Punt Returner of the Week. In addition, he was named an honorable mention National Wide Receiver of the Week.

He's the first player in Division I football, FBS schools included, to garner that many awards in one week in the history of the CFPA.

In addition to his CFPA awards, he has been named this week's Sports Network Special Teams National Player of the Week. He was also named this week's winner of the "Hambone Award" by Patrick Netherton of the Tim Brando Show. That award honors the week's best performer from a team that's not a FBS squad.

Spencer returned two kickoffs and one punt for touchdowns in a 69-38 win at SFA. He also caught seven passes for 152 yards, both career highs, with two touchdowns. He ended the game with a school and conference record 365 all-purpose yards with five total touchdowns.

McNeese's first two scores were a result of his kickoff returns - the first a 93 yarder followed by an 85-yard return. In the fourth quarter, he returned a punt 35 yards for a score.

His 178 kickoff return yards gives him 724 on the season, breaking the school record of 644 previously set by Flip Johnson in 1986.

The records Spencer set or broke include:
• two kickoff returns for TDs (new school game; tied school season and career; tied SLC game)
• three combined kick returns for TDs (new school game; tied school season; tied FCS season; new SLC game)
• 365 all-purpose yards (new school and SLC game)
• 724 season kickoff return yards (new school season)
