Warm Weekend, Stormy Sunday Night, Cold Mardi Gras

The big Mardi Gras holiday period will start off cloudy & mild for Acadiana but will likely finish with a return of winter temperatures...and in between, stormy conditions are expected for Sunday night.

Saturday and Sunday should be mostly cloudy & mild with highs in the low-mid 70s. Rain chances are expected to stay low through Sunday afternoon. Fog could be an issue late Saturday night into Sunday morning.

A strong cold front will approach the area late Sunday night engendering a high chance of showers and thunderstorms. Per the Storm Prediction Center, some storms could contain hail and/or highs winds.

As for the severe weather dynamics, it appears that they should be rather robust across Eastern Texas Sunday afternoon and evening, but as the potential squall line or area of strong storms advances into Louisiana, the dynamics should be storms at night this time of year are typically less severe.

Nonetheless, the last several fronts have produced stronger dynamics than previously forecasted, so be on the alert for the possibility of a "weather watch" and/or a few severe storms late Sunday night. Rain chance should end quickly early Monday morning.

And now for the cold part of the forecast...another strong arctic ridge of high pressure moving out of the Canadian Prairies Friday afternoon will surge southward behind Acadiana's Sunday night cold front delivering winter-like temperatures to the area early next week.

The cold Canadian air will also be traveling over snow covered and or glazed grounds through Oklahoma and North Texas so air-mass will stay quite chilled.

Look for highs Monday in the upper 40s to lower 50s with some brief clearing Monday afternoon.

It will be even colder for Mardi Gras with morning temperatures in the low-mid 30s rising into the mid-upper 40s under mostly cloudy skies.

Some precipitation could return to the area as early as Tuesday evening, but most likely Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Milder temperatures should return later next week.
