Victim identified in Jeanerette homicide

The Iberia Parish Coroner's Office has identified Alfred Buteaux, 56, as the victim of a Wednesday-night homicide in Jeanerette.

Buteaux was shot and killed in a wooded area off of the 12000 block of Kilgore Road south of Jeanerette on Wednesday evening, according to the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office.

A day later, 62-year-old Randall Girouard of Iberia Parish was charged with manslaughter for allegedly shooting Buteaux in the head.

Detectives believe the victim and suspect were involved in an argument prior to the shooting, but the two's relationship has not been released.

It's unclear why Girouard was charged with manslaughter instead of murder, and Iberia Parish Sheriff spokesman Capt. Ryan Turner says details behind that decision will not be released.
