Vermilion deputies bust alleged synthetic weed dealer

Vermilion deputies say they've taken an alleged synthetic weed dealer off the street.

According to Sheriff Mike Couvillon, the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office Narcotics Unit arrested the suspect, Terry Trahan, 26, of Morse, Thursday night after what it describes as a "traffic situation." The Narcotics Unit was called to the scene, Couvillon said, after patrol deputies questioned Trahan.

Deputies and a narcotics agent seized 32 grams of synthetic marijuana and several hydrocodone pills. It was found through questioning that Trahan had filled his prescription of 150 pills of hydrocodone that day, but only 39 were left in his possession. Deputies said that Trahan told them that he had traded his pills for the synthetic marijuana.

Trahan was charged with possession with the intent to distribute synthetic marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

"The trend in synthetic marijuana use and distribution is disturbing. Once again we attribute this to the fact that most of the people using this drug are uneducated to what it actually is. The chemicals used to make this drug are very dangerous to the nervous system, and health of the brain. Basically what they are consuming are hallucinogenic chemicals. We are seeing more and more stories of people having psychotic episodes, going into comas, and even dying due to this drug. My office has, and will continue to take down as many people as possible, who continue to sell, or even using this drug. One life saved is worth all of the man hours we put into this profession," the sheriff said.

Couvillon commended his patrol deputies for their efforts on this arrest. The sheriff added that anyone with tips on illicit drugs should contact the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office or the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office Narcotics Unit at 337-740-4501 or email the Task Force anonymously at
