Vehicular death of a Jennings toddler ruled accidental

The vehicular death Saturday afternoon of a Jennings two-year-old has been ruled accidental.

The incident apparently occurred while the child's stepfather, who reportedly is "devastated", drove to a barn in the rear of the property at a rural, Acadia Parish residence in the 3300 block of Riverside Rd.

The child was one of three children their mother had been watching, according to Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office spokesperson Maxine Trahan, while the stepfather unlocked the gate, drove to the barn, and returned to close the gate.

According to Trahan, the stepfather "noticed the child lying on the ground" as he was securing the gate.

Responding to the scene was APSO, assisted by the Acadia Parish Coroner's Office, Acadian Ambulance and Evangeline Fire Department.
