UPDATE: Opelousas Girl Hit by Stray Bullet

New Information:

Police are now looking for 17 year old Casey Rubin of Opelousas. They say he is considered a person of interest. The other man they took into custody last night has been released and is not facing any charges.

Meantime, the 8 year old victim is now recovering at a Lafayette hospital after undergoing surgery. She is said to be doing well and should be released early next week.

An 8 year old Opelousas girl is in stable condition, recovering from a gunshot wound sustained near her home. It happened near the intersection of Plantar Street and Railroad Avenue in Opelousas. Chief Perry Gallow says the girl was in the wrong place at the wrong time; hit by a stray bullet after an argument escalated between two men.

"One chose to pull out a weapon, not showing any consideration for what's on the other end, what the bullet could meet once discharged from his firearm," said Gallow.

The girl was about 100 yards away from where the gun was fired and was shot in the leg. One of the men was arrested, but police do not believe he is the shooter. Police are still investigating, working to determine the identity and location of the shooter.
