Update On Sheriff's Office and Jail in St. Landry

St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz has been talking for years about expanding the jail and moving his staff into a centralized office.

We learned today neither project is going to happen any time soon.

"We had a second property in mind and we made an offer but of course the offer was rejected, I was short of their appraisal,"

Sheriff Bobby Guidroz of St. Landry Parish thought he was close to getting a building again- but this is the second time a deal has fallen through. You may recall the sheriff was looking at a car dealership on Union street in Opelousas-- but opposition in the community put a damper on that. More recently the sheriff was eyeing Service Builders Lot, but as you heard him say the price isn't right.

Parish President Don Menard: "It's just going to be a matter of time, i think its something the sheriff has on the backburner. look that's just like the jail, the parish needs to expand that, but we all have to work within our means."

As it stands right now the Sheriff's main office is seperated from the criminal investigation unit and the sheriff wants to bring everyone under one roof.

"When the economy comes around we'll start shopping again," Guirdroz says.

As for the jail though an expansion isn't in the cards in the near future, both the sheriff and parish president say the jail is falling into disrepair and they need the community to vote yes for a jail maintenance tax come next election.

"We failed to get it passed last time because we didn't sell it right to the public."

"We're going to get the message out to the public that this is important."
