George Lowdins, the 30-year-old accused of shooting a Jennings police officer in the neck, has pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer in the line of duty and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Lowdins is accused of shooting Sgt. Ricky Benoit after officers responded to a domestic disturbance call.
According to Jennings Police Department, Benoit is still in a rehab unit in New Orleans. He was given a wheelchair that will allow him to stand and help rebuild the muscles in his legs, but he is still not walking on his own.
His family will meet with doctors Aug.14 to determine when and if he will be able to go home and continue his rehabilitation in Jennings.
Lowdins' trial date has been set for Jan. 26. He remains in the Jeff Davis Parish Jail on a $1 million bond.
