UPDATE: New road closures announced after bomb threat is called into UL

State Police are investigating a possible second suspicious device near UL in the area of Taft and St. Mary. The first suspicious device was found in a trash can at Girard Park.

KATC received a call about a bomb threat at approximately 5:30 a.m. Shortly after police ordered dorm residents to stay in their dorms and everyone else on campus to evacuate.

The evacuation area has since expanded to include the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce on St. Mary Boulevard.

Investigators say they are planning to render the first suspicious device safe sometime this morning. People in the Girard Park area may hear an explosion.

Lafayette Police are asking motorists to avoid the area around the UL campus and related locations. This area includes major roadways such as Johnston Street, St. Mary Boulevard, South College Road, West Pinhook Road, University Avenue, as well as roadways associated with the Oil Center.
