NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Researchers at the University of New Orleans are trying to develop an eel-like device to slither through shallow water to gain reconnaissance information.
The Times Picayune said the work at the Office of Naval Research is being underwritten by a $937,000 grant from the Navy.
The robotic device will be designed to collected data and conduct surveillance missions in cases where a person might be in danger of being spotted.
While working on the device, scientists also will try to confirm a swimming theory of low drag and high efficiency developed by UNO professor William Vorus.
