LAFAYETTE, La. - 17 home games, including 14 at the Cajundome highlight the 2013-14 Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball schedule, which was released by head coach Garry Brodhead on Tuesday.
"We are excited about the schedule because of all the home games we have," Brodhead said. "It is exciting for our players and our fans to play most of our games in a great facility like the Cajundome this year and have a new home."
"I think it's great for recruiting, especially," Brodhead said of the teams new home. "It is a great court and a beautiful facility. It is also great for the kids we recruited that are here now to be put in that position to play there."
The schedule features nine games against in-state opponents, including trips from Loyola, Centenary, SUNO, Xavier, Southeastern and ULM to Lafayette. The Cajuns had nine interstate games in 2012-13 as well, going 6-3 in those games.
The Cajuns open the regular season at the Cajundome, on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. when Nebraska-Omaha comes to town.
After basically alternating home and away contests in November, the Cajuns will take to the road for three games, their longest time away from home all season. They will travel to Mississippi State on Wednesday Dec. 4, Louisiana Tech on Saturday Dec. 7, and then to New Orleans on Saturday Dec. 14.
The Cajuns will return home to play two more nonconference games to sandwich the holiday break, first against Alcorn State on Dec. 19, and then 10 days later against Southeastern (Dec. 29), before kicking off the Sun Belt schedule.
With changes in the Sun Belt during the summer, the league will now play an 18-game double round robin schedule.
8-of-9 conference games will be played at the Cajundome with the conference home opener against Texas State being the only one in Earl K. Long Gymnasium.
"We looked at the schedule and tried to keep it even," Brodhead said of the even spread home and road games. "Not missing class is one of the main things, and we did a pretty good job in the games we could control.
Louisiana will be home for its longest homestand in the middle of February when last year's West Division champions, UALR, come to town (Feb. 12), followed by Arkansas State (Feb. 15) and Troy (Feb. 19).
With 90 percent of their scoring returning and all five starters back from 2012-13, the Cajuns have excitement beyond just having a new home.
Though the first game isn't until November 8, practices will start in the beginning of September with two exhibition games against Loyola (Oct. 30) and Centenary (Nov. 4), before Nebraska-Omaha comes to town.
2013-14 Schedule Notes
The Cajuns will take on Centenary in an exhibition match up for the second season in a row, defeating them 108-38 last season.
The game against Nebraska-Omaha will finish up a two-year home and home contract with the Mavericks.
The schedule features games against a pair of Mavericks (Nebraska-Omaha & UT Arlington) and a pair of Trojans (Troy and UALR).
The schedule features six home doubleheaders with the men's team, all in the Cajundome.
The Cajuns will get 10 days off for the holidays and half a week off for Thanksgiving.
