Two Candidates Will Run For Mayor Of Grand Coteau

Because of the death of Grand Coteau Mayor Henry Pierre in September, town residents must now cast their ballot on Saturday.

"I'm trying to follow in his footsteps. I'm trying to accomplish some of those things he was not able to do," said Interim Mayor Virginia Pierre.

Pierre says she knows she has big shoes to fill when it comes to keeping her late husband's job but is ready for the challenge.

"At first, I was reluctant about it because I knew I had some very big shoes to walk in," said Pierre. "I actually love the job."

For the last seven months, Pierre has been sitting where her late husband sat, trying to accomplish everything he had planned for the Town of Grand Coteau.

"My husband loved the little historic Town of Grand Coteau, and he had such bright futures for the town," said Pierre. "I'd just like to continue what he started and was not able to finish."

And Saturday's election will determine that.

"I just want to see our little town grow. It's a historical town and I just want the best for it and the best for the community," said Pierre.

Pierre is running against Mayor-Pro-Tem Shaterral Johnson, who has been serving on the town's board for the last six years.

"I wish Mayor Henry Pierre was still here because he was a great mayor," said Johnson. "We worked well together. He kept me informed of what was going on in the town, and as an elected official now, I can say, I am totally in the dark."

Johnson says it has always been her dream to become mayor of the town she loves so much.

"The first thing is to continue to work with my state representative, my senator, my United State's congressman, since I have a great working relationship with them," said Johnson. "(I hope) to bring more money to our Town of Grand Coteau, to continue to beautify our town and to do things for the children and the park. I am a fighter. I keep working until I get results. I do not stop."
