Tulane Applications Reach Record Mark

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Tulane University received a record number of applications this year, but only a fraction of those students are expected to attend.
The Uptown campus received nearly 44,000 applications. The number of applications received this year was more than twice the number received in 2004, before Hurricane Katrina pummeled the city.
Of the 11,371 students the private school accepted this year, only about 1,700, or 15 percent, will attend.
Earl Retif, Tulane's registrar and vice president for enrollment management, still says the jump in applications is a good thing and has improved the quality of the incoming class.
A major factor driving the increase is Tulane's decision to drop its $50 application fee in 2006.
