The Winter That Just Won't End

Once again it seems Old Man Winter may be moving through parts of Louisiana as it seems once again there is a slight chance for some frozen precipitation across northern parts of Acadiana.

The National Weather Service, in fact, has issues a Winter Weather Advisory from 9:00 am to noon Thursday for the central parishes including Vernon, Rapides, and Avoyelles Parish.

This is not an indicator that we will see widespread winter weather as we have with the last few storms and it doesn't look as if the impact on Tuesday will be as severe as what Acadiana experienced last week.

Although similar in wording there is quite a significant difference in a Winter Weather Advisory and a Winter Storm Warning, but both should be taken seriously.

The advisory is simply trying to put people on alert that there is the chance for winter weather, in this case light freezing rain or light sleet, and that it would be good to keep slick conditions in mind when planning your commute

A warning is slightly more serious, it implies that winter weather is all but imminent; accumulating snow and ice become a major concern and the impacts on travel will be greater (this was what we saw with the last two systems).

Again just to reiterate as of Wednesday afternoon the central parishes are under a Winter Weather ADVISORY.

The exact forecast is a tricky one with a deep moist layer sitting up in the atmosphere and a shallow dry layer that will dry to get any precipitation to evaporate.

Temperatures late Thursday afternoon look to get above the freezing mark but the chance for some light sleet/freezing rain will still be possible.

Regardless it will be chilly and cloudy with the best chances for precipitation of any kind arriving between mid morning and early afternoon.

At this time any precipitation looks incredibly light and accumulation probably won't be any higher then 1/10 of an inch.

Forecasts like this can change quickly so make sure you stay with KATC for all forecast updates.
