LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - A Texas man has been sentenced in Lafayette to life in prison for his role in a drug trafficking operation.
A federal jury convicted 45-year-old Antonio Luna Valdez, of Weslaco, Texas, of a conspiracy charge in February. U.S. District Judge Rebecca Doherty sentenced him on Monday.
Prosecutors say Valdez and others smuggled large quantities of cocaine and marijuana from Mexico into the U.S., including Louisiana.
Authorities seized more than $1.2 million in cash and an 18-wheeler that was used to transport drugs as part of their investigation.
