A Napoleonville man is accused of running over a 4-year-old child who was riding his bike during a police chase.
Sheriff Mike Waguespack says around 5:30 pm on Sunday, March 23rd, a Patrol Sergeant attempted to pull over a Chevy Tahoe travelling at a high rate of speed southbound on Highway 1. The driver of the Tahoe allegedly made a left turn onto Delaune Street, running over a 4-year-old child riding his bike.
The child was air-lifted by Acadian Ambulance to a Baton Rouge Hospital and is currently in stable condition with moderate to severe injuries.
After hitting the child, 4 occupants of the vehicle, including the driver, allegedly fled on foot into a wooded area. 3 of the 4 subjects were arrested within the half hour.
Troopers arrested 28-year-old Larry Wiggins, charging him with the following: Felony Hit and Run, Unlicensed Driver, DWI 2nd Offense, and First Degree Vehicular Negligent Injury. Deputies in Assumption Parish charged Wiggins with Aggravated Flight from an Officer, Speeding (72 in a 50 mph zone) and Resisting an Officer.
