State seeks to recover funds from school

RUSTON, La. (AP) - State Superintendent John White says the Louisiana Department of Education is working with state officials to recover money from a local school.

The News-Star reports the state is seeking to recover $378,000 from New Living Word in Ruston, which was part of the Louisiana Scholarship Program for the 2012-13 school year.

An audit conducted earlier this year determined that the school overcharged the state for students who were participating in the scholarship program.

Louisiana law requires that a school participating in the scholarship program not charge the state more for tuition than it charges for nonscholarship students.

Principal Jerry Baldwin contends the school has done nothing wrong and has served its student population well.
