State, nonprofits plan derelict crab trap cleanup

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has set dates for cleaning abandoned crab traps from waterways in St. Bernard, Plaquemines and Terrebonne parishes.
The department and conservation groups are also calling for volunteers to haul out the traps, protecting blue crabs and improving safety for boaters.
Clean-ups in St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes begin at 6 a.m. Feb. 25 and end at 6 a.m. March 5. The department and Louisiana Sea Grant will host volunteer clean-up days on two Saturdays - Feb. 25 and March 3 - at Sweetwater Marina on Delacroix Island.
The Terrebonne Parish clean-up runs from 6 a.m. March 17 to 6 a.m. March 26. Wildlife and Fisheries will host a volunteer clean-up day on Saturday, March 17 at Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium in Cocodrie.
