Tonight, the St. Mary Parish fatal accident that claimed the lives of four people last February will be highlighted in a report on World News Tonight at 5:30 p.m.
ABC Investigator Brian Ross is profiling tire companies who helped defeat proposed laws in eight states that would require inspection of tires for age. You'll recall in the fatal accident, which involved a LHS bus, the tires on the other vehicle were more than 10 years old and needed to be replaced.
Ford, GM and Chrysler all urge motorists to replace of tires that are six years of age or older because of the possibility the rubber in them could degrade and create a dangerous situation in which the tire loses its tread. But according to ABC, the tire industry trade group, the Rubber Manufacturers of America, says the six-year limit is "an arbitrary date" not supported by facts and has hired lobbyists to defeat laws that would require mandatory inspection of tire age.
