St. Landry School Board Must Fill Seat or Governor Steps In

The St. Landry Parish School Board will vote next Thursday to fill a vacant seat left after a board member died. Ronald Carriere passed away Sunday of a heart attack at the age of 80. According to school board officials, the board will first adopt a resolution declaring Carriere's seat vacant. After that, the board will vote to appoint an interim member. If a majority vote is not reached, the seat will remain vacant either until Governor Bobby Jindal appoints someone to the post or until a special election is held.

Last year, the St. Landry Parish School Board could not reach a majority vote to fill a vacant spot after Scott Richard resigned from his post. Governor Jindal failed to name a replacement, leaving the seat vacant until Randy Wagley won the job in the November election.

School board officials say anyone interested in holding the office may submit a letter of interest to the superintendent and board president. Only those who submit letters of interest will be considered for the position. No date has been set for the special election to permanently fill the seat.
