St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Department Gets F.A.T.S.

Deputy Joesph Francis can now practice real-life scenarios from the comfort of the new firearms training simulator, better known as "FATS."

"[It's] the same as you would encounter on the streets or on the jobs. I'd rather do it here and mess up here before I get on the street," says St. Landry Parish Deputy Joesph Francis.

The puppet master behind the simulator is training officer Captain Eddie Thibodeaux.

Depending on how the deputy responds, Thibodeaux will control how FATS responds.

"I can either make him surrender, I can make him fight, I can make him run," says Captain Thibodeaux.

"I made a promise. We committed to a higher standard," states St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz.

Thanks to a $22,000 grant for FATS, new technology helps the Sheriff's Department can now "train in the 21st century."

The Sheriff says he plans to share the wealth with any other law enforcement agency.

"It's not going to cost them a dime. All they have to do is contact me or Captain Thibodeaux with the training center and set something up."
