Residents in Butte La Rose Brace for Floods

Many in Butte La Rose spent this past weekend packing up their camps, after officials urged residents to self-evacuate. Among those still moving things out Tuesday, was David Blansett, who wasn't packing up a camp, instead he was leaving his home.

"We don't want to take a chance, we're trying to get up and get out and make sure we're safe," he said.

Several hundred people turned out to a public meeting Tuesday night at the Butte La Rose fire station. There, St. Martin Parish President Guy Cormier urged residents to strongly consider self-evacuation.

"We're giving you time to do that, knowing that the Morganza spillway is going to be open, you have time to do that now," said Cormier.

Colonel Ed Fleming, commander of the Army Corps of Engineers' New Orleans District, warned residents that the very spot where Tuesday night's meeting was held could see flood waters as high as 15 feet, within 24 hours of opening the Morganza spillway. Col. Fleming said the corps hopes to give areas at least 3 days notice before opening the spilway. Final approval on that matter could come as early as Saturday.
