Sentencing Thursday for 2 former councilmen

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - Former Monroe City Councilmen Arthur Gilmore and Robert Stevens are scheduled to be sentenced this week for accepting bribe payments.

The News-Star reports they are set to appear for sentencing at the federal courthouse in Shreveport on Thursday. They each face up to 20 years in prison.

Gilmore and Stevens were convicted in May 2011 of bribery and extortion, but U.S. District Judge Donald Walter ruled in March that they would receive a new trial.

Stevens pleaded guilty in May to accepting cash bribe payments. Because he made the plea agreement with the federal government, the extortion charge was dropped.

Gilmore went ahead with his four-day trial in Shreveport and on May 16 was found guilty of racketeering and not guilty of extortion.
