NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A strong police presence was evident as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival opened less than two weeks after the Boston Marathon bomb explosions.
Police on foot and in electric carts were out in force on the site and in the surrounding area Friday. One veteran Jazz Fest patron said bags were checked more thoroughly. Another fest-goer said he was happy to see what he perceived as a heavier police presence.
Festival officials offered few details about what, if any security changes were made this year. They said the security plan is evaluated and adjusted every year in consultation with state, local and federal authorities.
Jazz Fest draws tens of thousands of visitors daily to the Fair Grounds race track during its seven-day run.
