Search for Evangeline Parish Escaped Inmate Ends

The search for an escaped Evangline Parish prisoner ends. Brian Soileau is in custody this evening. He escaped from the Pine Praire Correctional Center two weeks ago tomorrow. Investigators said he climbed a barbed wire fence to break out. He was serving time for burglary and awaiting trial for robbing a bank in Pine Prarie.

The manhunt ended today just south of Oklahoma City. He led authorities on a chase and after a shoot out between deputies and Soileau, he was finally captured.

Sheriff Eddie Soileau said he's glad its come to an end.

He said, " I'm happy. My department is happy with all the work we put in and I'm sure the people in the parish are feeling safer and happy as of this day."

After 13 days and countless hours of searching, authorities finally received a tip that escaped inmate Brian Soileau was seen hundreds of miles away near Oklahoma City.

State Trooper Stephen Hammons said, "he was pulling out of Wal-mart at which point he was driving the vehicle. The same vehicle we thought he was driving yesterday. He was still in that car and that's when the pursuit ensued."

Soileau led Oklahoma authorities on a forty minute chase traveling at speeds up to 95 miles per hour and driving the wrong way down Interstate 35.

Hammons said,"he actually had a foot pursuit with them, where shots were exchanged with him and the troopers."

Troopers say Soileau was hit and transported to a hospital where he's in serious condition. Sheriff Eddie Soileau said this isn't the inmates first encounter with the law, but he didn't think it would end so dramatically.

"I never knew him as a violent person," he said. "But one thing led to another with the escape and the bank robbery and he was becoming a very violent person."

He said the investigation is far from over.

"We aren't going to leave one rock uncovered because we have information that he was aided and ebbed ed by at least one person, possibility more, and the details of where he stayed are still unfolding," he explained.
