School Funding Formula Short $42M

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - As if the budget news wasn't bad enough. The Jindal administration has been told the state budget underestimated the number of students attending public schools this school year, and the funding formula for school districts is short $42 million.
That's money lawmakers and the governor's office will need to find before the fiscal year ends June 30.
Rene Greer, a spokeswoman for the Louisiana Department of Education says 9,000 more students were in state public schools on Oct. 1 than eight months earlier.
The public school funding formula, called the Minimum Foundation Program or MFP, pays schools per student. It's not uncommon for the numbers to be adjusted and a midyear shortfall to emerge. But with hefty budget problems looming, the MFP shortfall is more problematic this year.
