School Board Holds Hearing for NHS Teacher Accused of Simple Battery

A Lafayette Parish School teacher, accused of simple battery, went before the School Board Wednesday night in a hearing. The teacher is Northside High School Coach Tawana Williams. In May of 2011, a student accused Williams of intentionally and forcefully bumping into her while walking on campus. The School Board must decide whether that is indeed the truth and what action, if any, to take.

Williams was also involved in a incident with the same student a year prior, in March 2010. In that incident, Williams was charged with inappropriate contact for allegedly grabbing the student by the arms and attempting to tug her off the bus. Those charges have since been dropped.

The hearing lasted several hours Wednesday night with heated discussions between school board members and attorneys. The student involved in the incident testified, as well as the police officer who made the initial report and arrest. By 11:30 p.m. Wednesday the hearing was still going on, with at least a dozen more witnesses scheduled to testify.

If the School Board decides the contact between Williams and the student in May was deliberate, members have several options on what action to take. The two scenarios already presented to the board were suspension without pay or termination.
