Salvation Army Gives School Uniforms

The Lafayette Salvation Army is offering a little financial relief to families struggling amidst a tough economy and the oil spill.

They are giving away school uniforms to qualifying families next week, just in time for the school year to start.

Each child will get two uniforms.

Organizers of the 2-day giveaway event say the gently used uniforms for donation have been coming in fast, which is good news when many families are struggling financially.

"I'm sure the need will be greater this year, with the economy and oil spill we'll probably have more people needing assistance," says Melissa Pillsbury from the Salvation Army.

Maggie Augustine, a local grandmother of 6, says she comes to the thrift store at the start of every school year, bringing the kids.

"They were grateful, they tried the clothes... (this year) I'll bring them all."

The giveaway is Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 to 4:00 at the Salvation Army store located at 115 East Third Street in Lafayette.

Bring an ID, the social security cards of the children, proof of income, proof of expenses and proof of residence.

The uniforms will be given out that same day.
