Safety Complex Plan

The Public Safety Complex for the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office is now more than just a blueprint. Officials have released images of what the 1st phase will look like.

Corrections Director for the Sheriff's Department, Rob Reardon, says the complex will include 300 bed spaces for both work-release and minimum security prisoners. The department has a $15M budget for just the initial phase.

"There may be multiple phases to this project that will depend upon funding that's available in the future," Reardon said.

He says the facility is necessary so the Sheriff's Department can operate more efficiently and in turn, better protect the community.

The complex will be built on 29 acres in the 1900 block of W. Willow St. Although this is not a huge residential area. Deputies have held several meetings to inform nearby residents.

"They just want to be informed and that's what we're trying to do... That's why I wanted to get this information out to people just so they know what the site is going to look like in the future," Reardon said.

But, residents may not see the results of this plan, for quite some time.

"This is going to be a long process of planning, even the construction of the documents is going to take over a year to do before we even put a shovel in the ground," Reardon said.

There will not be a new tax to pay for the facility, instead, the Sheriff's Department will bond out the money.
