Residents question water insurance letters

Some Vermilion Parish residents are wondering if they are the target of a scam after receiving letters offering insurance for their water lines.

According to water works officials in the parish, the letters are not part of a scam, but they are not affiliated with any of the parish's water works districts.

Dale Stelly, the system manager for Vermilion Parish Water District No. 1, says a Connecticut company is behind the flyers. Stelly says the company circulating the letters is a legitimate insurance agency that offers optional policies covering pipes running from a meter to a home. The insurance that the company is offering, he says, would cover burst pipes and repairs stemming from a burst pipe.

Stelly, however, reminds parish residents that the company is in know way affiliated with or endorsed by the parish government or any of the parish's water districts.
