Relatives in "Disbelief" Over Man's Murder in His Own Front Yard

Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office continues to investigate a murder that involved the death of 24-year-old Ruston "Rusty" Miller. He was found dead in front of his home on Evangeline Highway near Basile around 1:00pm on Thursday. While his body was found Thursday, the Sheriff's Office said the murder could have taken place the night before.

As of Thursday night, the yellow crime scene tape still circled Miller's house. As family members stopped by, they told KATC that his body had been found on his front porch. Miller is part of a large family, relatives said he had many who cared about him.

"We can't believe it happened, because we just lost his parents, it's hard. I mean you don't know what people go through until it happens to you," said one relative.

Miller's parents died in June in a motorcycle accident while on a poker run, and now Miller leaves behind his own 14-week-old child. Relatives, who requested not to be identified, said life hasn't been easy for the 24-year-old. Trouble seemed to catch up with him this week starting with a fight Tuesday.

"He had an altercation at Wal-Mart parking lot and they followed him home and shot at his house three times Tuesday night, it's just unbelievable," said that same relative.

The Sheriff's Office also confirmed Rusty had been arrested earlier this week on aggravated assault charges, but had bonded out of jail. The Sheriff's Office did not elaborate on the circumstances of the arrest or when he was released from jail.

Despite Miller's latest troubles, relatives said he didn't deserve to be murdered like this, "We just want to know why, and why would somebody do this? Because nobody deserves this, nobody's family deserves this, he wasn't that bad of a person for this to happen to."

His family wants answers, and is asking anyone with any information to come forward to the Sheriff's Office.

"No matter how small it is, just contact them and let them know," pleaded family members.

The Sheriff's Office said they do have persons of interest, and are conducting interviews in the investigation. However, no suspects have been identified.
