Rapides board expects increased costs to budget

ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - The Rapides Parish School Board is preparing its $183 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

Finance Director Liz Domite expects budget increases when it comes to costs of retirement and hospitalization, as well as other additions like $500,000 for textbooks and $570,000 for staff reorganization.

Domite said contributions to the Teachers Retirement System of Louisiana have increased from 24.5 percent to 27.2 percent and some health benefit contributions have increased from 30 percent to 32.6 percent. That is a total increase to the budget of $2.5 million.

When the proposed 2013-14 budget is finalized, it will be available for public review at the Central Office and online through the board's website.

The Town Talk reports the board will hold public hearings for comment before final approval.
