Police to escort Acadia evacuees to homes beginning tonight

Acadia Parish residents evacuated following Tuesday's gas well blowout will be allowed to go home to gather essential items beginning this evening.

Residents living in the affected area will be allowed into the evacuation zone from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Residents will also be allowed into the area daily from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. throughout the remainder of the evacuation from

Evacuees who need to go home must report during those hours to the Eunice Fire Department #3 on Sittig Road. Residents will be required to show officials a photo ID with an address verifying their residence. Sheriff's deputies will then escort residents back to their homes.

Anyone with any questions about this process should call the Acadia Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness at 337-783-3457. After hours calls can be directed to the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office at 337-788-8772.

Crews began the staging process to begin capping the well. However, state troopers say the process is expected to be a prolonged event. No timetable has been set for when the well will be capped or when the evacuation will be lifted.
