More information is coming to light about Robert Heard's criminal past. The Eunice man is accused of stabbing and killing his wife, Demetra Doyle Heard, early Saturday morning.
"Earlier, even as a juvenile he has a very violent past," said Eunice Deputy Chief of Police Varden Guillory, Sr. "He has prior arrests for homicides."
When Robert Heard was only 15 years old, California police arrested him for murder. The victim was another classmate at Reseda High School in Reseda, California. Police said Heard shot and killed 17-year-old Michael Ensley at school. Ensley is the brother of Hollywood actress Niecy Nash.
The murder landed Heard in a California juvenile facility for nine years. After his release in February 2002, he moved to Louisiana.. Barely a year later, he's charged with attempted second degree murder in Shreveport. He spent eight more years behind bars and was released on parole in July 2011.
Fast forward to June 2012, Heard married Demetra Doyle in Eunice. They lived in a house on Prairie Avenue near neighbor Annabelle Godfrey.
"Whatever they went through or been going through just for the short period of time that she has known him, she never let it trouble her, you never seen it in her face that she had a problem. But I guess she figured out too late," said Godfrey.
After two months of marriage, police said Heard allegedly stabbed his wife early Saturday morning and then drove to Shreveport. He was involved in a chase and accident, and 12 hours after the incident, was arrested by Shreveport Police.
"I don't think she deserved to go out like that, she got children that love her that was crying big time. You left these kids without a mother, and they already don't have a father that they can depend on, all they had was the mother and you took her out," said Godfrey.
Heard was transported back to Eunice and then booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail. No bond has been set; he is scheduled to appear before a judge Monday on the first degree murder charges.
