A Lafayette Police Officer is on paid administrative leave after a shooting early Saturday morning.
Just after 11:00 PM Friday night, officers responded to a disturbance in the 100 block of Peggy Street. Once on scene, officers discovered the 74 year old male victim stabbed multiple times. The victim told offficers that a friend was at his residence when for unknown reasons grabbed a knife and stabbed him. The suspect then fled the scene in the victim's silver car. The victim was transported to an area hospital were he remains in guarded condition.
Just before 11:30 PM, officers spotted the victims car traveling north on the Evangeline Thruway in Lafayette. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle at the intersection of the NE Evangeline Thruway and Castille. As officers began to approach the vehicle, the suspect began backing up, striking one of the officers.
The officer responded by firing multiple shots into the vehicle. The suspect vehicle then began to move forward, striking a light pole and coming to a stop in the intersection of the NE Evangeline Thruway and Chalmette. The suspect, a 46 year old male of Lafayette, was transported to an area hospital where he later died.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid Administrative Leave and the Louisiana State Police have been called in to investigate the shooting. This is standard procedure for the Lafayette Police Department anytime there is a shooting involving an officer. The Lafayette Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division will continue to investigate the stabbing incident that occurred on Peggy Street.
