BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A single mother was killed and her
9-year-old daughter was shot multiple times during an apparent
burglary attempt at their Baton Rouge home, police said Friday.
Police identified the victim as Alexandra Engler, 42, who was
pronounced dead at the scene. Her daughter, who was shot at least
six times, managed to call 911 for help and is listed in stable
condition at a Baton Rouge hospital.
"This just looks like one of those crimes we talk about,"
Police Chief Jeff LeDuff told WAFB-TV. "There's no connection,
just no connection at all."
Detectives believe the assailants were trying to burglarize the
home when the shooting occurred.
Police said the shooting happened about 5:30 a.m. Investigators
say they are seeking two men in connection with the crime.
Residents who might have seen two men on bicycles in the area
around the time of the shooting are asked to contact police or
"We need you to give us a call. This family needs you to give
us a call. That little girl needs you to give us a call," LeDuff
The St. Luke's Episcopal Community is also offering a separate
reward of up to $2,500 for the person(s) responsible for this
"She was a really sweet, really kind person," neighbor Robert
Floyd said of Engler. "This is kind of shocking. Just real nice,
get-along-with-everybody kind of person."
