GRAMBLING, La. (AP) - Acclaimed poet Nikki Giovanni will be the next Lyceum Series speaker at Grambling State University.
The News-Star reports Giovanni will speak Thursday at 6 p.m. at Grambling's T. H. Harris Auditorium.
Giovanni has written some 30 books for adults and children, including volumes of poetry, illustrated children's books and three collections of essays. She has received 19 honorary doctorates and numerous other awards, including the Governors' Awards in the Arts from both the states of Tennessee and Virginia. Her two most recent volumes of poetry, "Love Poems" and "Blues: For All the Changes," were both winners of the NAACP Image Award in 1998 and 2000.
Since 1987, Giovanni has taught writing and literature at Virginia Tech, where she is a University Distinguished Professor.
