State Civil Service director Shannon Templet has approved a layoff plan associated with the closure of LSU's hospital in Pineville.
The plan involves elimination of 123 positions at Huey P. Long Medical Center set to close June 30.
LSU officials say the layoff was necessary "because of lack of funds due to a reduction in federal funding" for the hospital - the third LSU facility to close under a Jindal administration plan to move public hospitals into private control.
Various private hospitals already have taken over management of six other LSU hospitals. Only LSU's Lallie Kemp Medical Center in Independence remains public.
The Advocate reports Templet also implemented a hiring freeze in Rapides Parish for job titles abolished by the layoff.
