PRAGUE, Czech Republic - Rasheed Sulaiman scored a game-high 15 points and Aaron Gordon and Marcus Smart each added a double-double as Team USA opened up the second round of pool play with a 91-66 win over Brazil at the FIBA U19 World Championships.
Louisiana's Elfrid Payton started for the fourth straight game and played 20 minutes, scoring seven points with six rebounds, two assists and one steal. He was three-for-five from the field and made his only free throw attempt.
Gordon came off the bench to score 14 points with 10 rebounds while Smart added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Justice Winslow added 11 points off the bench.
Leonardo Demetrio was the only Brazil player in double figures, finishing with 15 points on seven-for-14 shooting.
In other Pool "F" action on Monday, Serbia defeated Russia, 60-46, and China edged Australia, 84-79.
The win improved Team USA to 4-0, tying it with Serbia for the Pool "F" lead. China is in third place with a 3-1 record followed by Australia (2-2) in fourth. Russia and Brazil are tied for fifth with 1-3 records.s
After winning their first three games in the tournament by an average of 61 points a game, the Americans received their first challenge in its opening round game of the Round of 12 pool play.
Although Team USA never trailed in the game, Brazil did tie the contest at 17-17 on a Deryk Ramos three-pointer with 50 seconds left in the opening quarter.
After Daniel Bordingon Barbieri scored for Brazil to make it a 40-36 game with 9:32 left in the third quarter, Team USA used an 18-0 run over the next 3:35 to open up a 58-36 lead and never look back.
The defense by the Americans was outstanding again, making 13 steals and forcing Brazil to make 22 turnovers and shoot just 24-for-69 from the field (.348).
Team USA has two games left in Pool "F" play, facing Australia on Tuesday (July 2) at 1:15 p.m. CDT and Serbia on Wednesday (July 3) at 1:15 p.m. CDT.
In other Pool "F" games on Tuesday, Brazil will face Russia at 6:15 a.m. CDT and Serbia will play China at 11:00 a.m. CDT.
