Pastor Ronald J. Harris was shot and killed inside the Tabernacle of Praise Worship Center yesterday evening. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office responded to the church in regard to the shooting. Deputies say, at 8:20 p.m. 53-year-old Woodrow Karey, Jr. allegedly walked into the church and shot Pastor Harris once with a shotgun, and then fired again at close range after Harris fell to the floor. Pastor Harris was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies say, Karey fled the church on foot, but later called the sheriff's office and surrendered without incident minutes after the shooting. Deputies were able to locate a shotgun and a .22 caliber pistol in a nearby wooded area.
He has been booked into the Calcasieu Correction Center and is charged with 2nd degree murder. Karey's bond is set at $1 million dollars. The motive for the shooting is still under investigation. Deputies say, Karey has no known criminal history.
