St. Landry Parish President Bill Fontenot is proposing a new sales tax to fund road construction projects in rural areas of the parish. Fontenot says the tax, which only be collect in the unincorporated areas of the parish, would raise between $90 and $100 million dollars over 15 years. Fontenot says the parish government could receive between $65 million and $70 million dollars in the first year of the tax through bonds.
A final resolution placing the tax on a ballot has not yet been approved. Fontenot says if the resolution will be discussed during either the April or May meeting. Fontenot says if the tax is put on a ballot, the parish government would hold a series of public forums to receive citizens' input.
