A St. Landry Parish woman is dead from exposure to the cold weather.
Opelousas Police say 51 year old Francis Cunha's body was found by a firefighter around 7:00 a.m. early Monday morning behind the fire station on North Main Street.
According Police Chief Perry Gallow, Cunha was offered shelter but refused to take it.
"Often times we did go and bring her in, and at times provided her shelter until things got better for her," Gallow said.
OPD is presently investigating the circumstances of her death, but Chief Gallow said it is likely weather-related.
There are two homeless shelters in Opelousas, the New Life Center for women and children, and the Opelousas Lighthouse Mission for men.
Lighthouse Mission Director Johnny says as the temperatures go down, their numbers go up.
"Whenever it gets cold like this, we want to open our arms and help any guy that needs help. We've gone from 23 men in the last three days to 30," Carriere said.
