The Louisiana Board of Ethics is charging Opelousas Mayor Donald Cravins, Sr. with allegedly violating state law because he failed to report income he received from the Louisiana Teacher Retirement System.
According to Louisiana law, elected officials must file an accurate financial statement every year, reporting income received by the individual or spouse. Because Cravins failed to do so, the Board of Ethics said he violated the law and must pay a fine.
Cravins said the income was from his wife's teacher retirement, and that his accountant must have over looked reporting her income. He said while it was only a mistake, he takes full responsibility.
"Again, (it's) an oversight. But having said that, I just have to say that it's their rules and though it's a technicality I have to abide by it and the buck stops with me," said Cravins.
Cravins said he take the necessary action to correct the mistake and comply with any penalties the board imposes.
