A man is hospitalized after his plane crashed at the St. Landry Parish Airport in Opelousas.
Police say the pilot hadn't gotten very far off the ground before realizing something was very wrong.
The Federal Aviation Administration arrived just after one o'clock Saturday afternoon at the St. Landry Parish Airport to investigate the crash. It all happened around 11 o'clock just west of the airport. The four seater Mooney plane is missing a wheel and there is some significant damage to the wings after it made impact.
Officials say that the pilot, 52 year old Arnold Johnstone of Oklahoma was attempting to take off when his plane lost power. Johnstone was on his way to Wisconsin and investigators say it's a miracle that his injuries aren't worse.
"He was transported to Opelousas General and is in stable condition, and he did pull himself out of the plane using his own power," said Darren Zachary with the Opelousas Police Department.
I did personally speak to Arnold Johnstone in his hospital room at Opelousas General, but due to hospital policies we were unable to get an on camera interview.
