Officials: House fire began in attic

A Lafayette family is alive after escaping from an early-morning fire at their home.

The blaze began at the home in the 300 block of Brookside Drive around 1:20 a.m.

Investigators say the fire started in the attic and burned through the roof. According to fire officials, the family got out of the house as firefighters were arriving on the scene. Firefighters say the family was awakened by the sound a smoke detector, allowing them to escape.

The home suffered heavy fire and water damage. Officials say the house is salvageable.
