Officer at Center of Internal Investigation Retires

The officer accused of failing to act at the scene of crime, is no longer with the Lafayette Police Department. Major Glen Dartez is now retired, after working for the department since 1976.

Maj. Dartez was head of the Lafayette Police Department's criminal investigations division. He was placed on paid administrative leave as authorities investigated allegations from the night of June 11, 2010.

William Phillips Jr, allegedly saw Dartez in his police cruiser in the neighborhood the night his girlfriend Montie Marie, 44, stopped breathing. Martie and Willams shared a home in the 200 block of Wilcox Street. Phillips allegedly asked the officer for help but was told he was off duty.

Martie died from injuries sustained from a beating. The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head. Phillips was eventually charged with second degree murder for the beating death.

Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft wouldn't comment on the retirement of Dartez or the policy violation accusations, citing that it is an active investigation.
