Offensive Fireworks Continue For UL Hoops, Cruise Past Centenary

LAFAYETTE - Shawn Long scored a career-high 30 points on a perfect 12-for-12 from the floor and freshman Vieux Kande scored eight of his season-high 10 points in a 21-5 run in the first half as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns led from wire-to-wire and defeated Centenary College, 103-69, on Tuesday at the Cajundome.

Kasey Shepherd added 19 points for Louisiana (8-3), which placed five players in double figures and shot a season-high 63.9 percent from the floor (39-for-61). Elfrid Payton added 15 points and seven assists for the Ragin' Cajuns while Kevin Brown chipped in with a season-high 11.

Long, whose previous career scoring best was 29 points against McNeese State on Nov. 12, became the first Cajun to finish perfect from the floor since Chris Manuel went 10-for-10 against Lamar on Feb. 19, 1998. The Morgan City native grabbed seven rebounds and blocked a pair of shots as the Ragin' Cajuns held Centenary (4-2) to 42 percent from the floor

Kande, who was averaging less than six minutes per game, finished 4-for-6 from the floor in his most extensive action of the season. The 6-foot-8 product scored his first bucket of the game - and second of the season - with 11:42 remaining in the first half that gave the Cajuns a 19-11 lead. Kande added a dunk and a layup before his bucket with 8:35 remaining gave Louisiana a 27-14 lead.

A layup by Long with 7:44 remaining in the half gave the Cajuns a 29-14 lead before 3-pointers by Donovan Williams, Kevin Brown and Shepherd pushed the lead to 38-16 at the 5:31 mark.

After Centenary closed the gap to 72-53 on a pair of free throws by Jonathan Blount with 11:48 left, Long fueled a 13-4 run for the Cajuns as he scored seven points, including a pair of free throws at the 8:59 mark to cap of his night.

Louisiana finished 9-for-20 from behind the 3-point line with Shepherd finishing perfect from long range with a career-high five 3-pointers. Long grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Cajuns while Shepherd recorded four steals.

Blount, who entered the game averaging 22.6 points per contest, led the Gents with 28 points finishing 8-for-13 from the floor and 9-for-11 from the free throw line. Former Northside High product Kendell Demouchet added 17 points for the Gents while grabbing four rebounds with two blocked shots.

Louisiana will return to action on Thursday when it visits Jackson State in a 7:30 p.m. contest at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.
